5 Reasons Why You Should Add Face Serum to Your Skincare Routine

Today’s post is all about face serum. You don’t have one yet? I hope the five reasons for using it will make you reach for one. Sit back and read on. 🙂

I’m sure you either use or have heard of a product called serum. I got myself one as soon as I noticed that my favorite face cream wasn’t enough… Serums are rich in oils, botanical extracts, flower water and high concentrations of active ingredients. Is it the only reason why we should go for such a product? What’s the point of applying a face serum?

#1

In comparison to a face cream, it has a much higher concentration of ingredients, therefore produces more striking effects. What’s more, it is light-textured – gel-like or runny. Most serums come in a dropper bottle because just a few drops are enough for single use. Just a small amount of it contains a large concentration of beneficial ingredients – active substances, vitamins and minerals. The formula is designed so as to reach the deep layers of skin, nourishing and revitalizing it. However, it doesn’t replace a face cream or moisturizer – it makes a perfect match with them. Always remember to apply your cream after serum.

#2

It’s never too soon to start using a face serum, but adding it to the skin care routine must be done reasonably and gradually. You need to start with small doses of active ingredients to allow the skin to get used to them. There’s a thing you should know about serums: the longer we use them, the better the effects. Also, over time, we can get stronger serums which have a more powerful effect on our skin helping us tackle many problems such as acne, oil buildup, dehydrated skin, fine lines, skin ageing, sagging, loss of firmness, etc.

#3

Thanks to a variety of active ingredients and serum textures, we can easily choose the right product for the type of our skin and desired effect. The beauty supply stores offer hydrating serums e.g. with hyaluronic acid, vitamin-rich serums with vitamin A, C or E, serums with AHA or BHA acids which improve problematic acne and oily skins.

#4

Serum is efficient and a little goes a long way. For one application, we need just a few drops. It’s a perfect addition to our daily skincare routine which should be varied and feature rich formulas. Even a tiny amount of the highly-concentrated serum delivers many active ingredients to the skin.

#5

We can use serum all year round, morning and evening, except for the strong acid-based serums. Before using serum in the AM, we should check the ingredient list. If serum is high in vitamin C or retinol – photosensitizing substances – then going out without putting 50 SPF cream on may lead to irritations, redness or even burnt skin.

How to use face serum?

Serum complements our daily skin care routine. We should know when to use it exactly. Here’s an example of my morning face care routine:

1. cleansing with a mild gel

2. exfoliating with a fine-grained scrub or using a rich face mask

3. using a toner to restore natural pH balance

4. applying a lightweight gel serum

5. applying SPF-rich moisturizer

Hope you feel encouraged to give it a try 🙂 Are you going to add face serum to your skincare kit?
